Ahhh cool thanks for this. I'm planning on using them when/if I go over for the 3 months I have planned for next year. I'd probably pay more to be in/near Shibuya/Harajuku just cos that's how I am, I have always lived in the inner city I find anything further a nightmare (its just how I am, when I first lived in Tokyo my Nova apartment was in Higashi Fuchu, I moved out within a month as the commute to work in Shinjuku killed me as did the lameness of the area). Good to know that the bad reviews aren't all that accurate. I always just assume anyway that its just babied gaijin who have always lived with their parents back home who find the fact they have to pay rent on time(!) and clean up the place too hard to manage...
It can be a bit of a false economy too. We were paying 210 yen a pop just to get to the nearest Yamanote line station on the subway. Since that was Sugamo, it was even more to get anywhere we wanted to be. It doesn't sound much but it soon adds up. Then on top of that, you either have leave early or make the staying out all night commitment (which costs more $$$).
Yeah a lot of the complains seem to be just whinges. The main worry we had was getting our deposit back since I read online that NEVER happens. We had no issues though, just a quick inspection to make sure the place looked okay and we hadn't knicked anything.
Btw I found 3 months a crappy length of time to be in Tokyo - too long to be on hols, too short to be living there. If you have the time and $$$, stay longer. I got a $200 return flight to Seoul to extend my visa (which I didn't end up using anyway). Actually, I think you'd love Seoul - it's THE destination right now and really interesting fashion, in a completely different way to Tokyo.
Thanks for the lovely tip! If my hubs and I ever decide to stay with his cousin for a stretch of time longer than a 2 week mini-vacation I will look into Sakura house. I would have to wear out our welcome with his cousin.
I am happy you had a good experience with SH.. my room was full of mold that wouldn't go away.. eventually I had to go to the clinic because I had a difficult time breathing. Staff told me to move out when I complained!
